Alabama architects continuing education

A registered architect is required, by the Alabama Board for Registration of Architects, to complete no less than 12 hours of continuing education hours each year. One hour of continuing education is 50 minutes of contact time. Continuing Education must be based on the study of relevant technical and professional architectural subjects relating to safeguarding live, health, property, and promoting the public welfare. The Board approves courses, credits and continuing education hours for courses and any other method of earning credit

  • At least eight of the continuing education hours must be earned in a structured setting. No more than four continuing education hours maybe earned in a self-directed setting. A structured setting can include (1) attending professional or technical presentations at meeting conventions or conferences. (2) attending an in-house program provided by a business or organization. (3) attending a seminar, tutorial, short course, on-line course, correspondence course, televised course or videotaped course. (4) Successfully completing college or university sponsored courses. (5) successful completion of a course that award continuing education credits.
  • The Self-directed continuing education can include (1) reading books or magazine articles on Health, Safety and Welfare issues. (2) Visiting an architecturally significant site with focus on Health, Safety and Welfare issues. (3) Viewing video or presentations on Health, safety and welfare issues. (4) Making professional or technical presentations at meetings, conventions or conferences. (5) Teaching or instructing a qualified presentation (credit provided for only one of multiple presentations). (6) Authoring published papers, articles or books on health, safety and welfare issues. (7) Actively participating in a technical professional society or organization as an officer or committee member. (8) Participating in activities that contribute to the welfare of the community and are directly related to the practice of architecture.
  • A new architect is not required to complete 12 hours of continuing education his first year. This does not apply to an architect that has reinstated his registration
  • To process the registration renewal, details to permit verification, a signature and the appropriate fee must be included on/with the Continuing Education Annual Report Form. A random sample of all annual reports will be conducted to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Registrant is responsible for retaining proof of participation in continuing education activities. Supporting documents may include but are not limited to a log showing activity claimed, sponsoring organization, location, duration and similar information (2) Certificates of Completion (3) provide information to relate the activity to the health, safety and welfare of the public. Records must be retained for a period of at least one year.
  • An grace period of 60 days is provided when continuing education hours submitted are considered invalid by the Board.
  • An architect’s certificate of registration will not be renewed if continuing education is not completed and so documented on the annual report.
